Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised an article written by Union Minister of State for Textiles, Shri Pabitra Margherita, which talks about the rapid growth of India’s textile and handloom sector. Says Handloom Industry is Inspiring the World with Heritage and Innovation

Sharing the article on his social media handle X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi said:

India’s textile industry is one of the oldest and most important sectors in the country. It has been a part of Indian culture and economy for thousands of years. Today, it is not only preserving our rich heritage, but also using modern technology and new designs to grow globally.

The article shared by the Prime Minister highlights how:

  • Indian handloom products are now being appreciated across the world.
  • Traditional weavers are being supported through government schemes.
  • Use of digital tools, e-commerce, and sustainability practices is making the industry more competitive.

Handloom Sector: A Source of Pride and Livelihood

India’s handloom sector gives employment to millions of families, especially women in rural areas. From Assam’s Mekhela Chador to Banarasi Sarees and Kanchipuram silks, each region of India has something special to offer.

The government has been running several programs to help weavers and boost textile exports, such as:

  • PM MITRA Parks for modern textile infrastructure
  • Handloom Export Promotion Council for international reach
  • Financial help and training for small weavers
