Prime Minister Narendra Modi started the year-long celebration of 150 years of India’s national song “Vande Mataram” in New Delhi on November 7, 2025.
During his speech, PM Modi said that “Vande Mataram” is not just a song it is a mantra, an energy, a dream, and a promise. He said this song shows our deep love and respect for Maa Bharati (Mother India) and reminds every Indian of our freedom struggle and our duty to protect it.
PM Modi said that Vande Mataram became the voice of India’s freedom fighters during the British rule. From Rabindranath Tagore to Sri Aurobindo, from Bengal’s revolutionaries to freedom movements across India everyone sang “Vande Mataram” with pride.
He remembered how freedom fighters chanted “Vande Mataram” even while facing bullets and gallows, and said that it gave strength and unity to all Indians.
To mark this special occasion, the Prime Minister also released a commemorative coin and postage stamp dedicated to “Vande Mataram”. He said that this day will fill every Indian with new inspiration and energy.
PM Modi explained that the real meaning of “Vande Mataram” is Bharat itself a land blessed with rivers, forests, fertile soil, and rich culture. He recalled how writer Bankim Chandra Chatterjee composed the song in 1875 in his famous novel Anandamath, when India was under British rule. The song gave people hope for a free and prosperous nation.
The Prime Minister said that the message of “Vande Mataram” is timeless, and it continues to inspire India even today, whether it’s in science, technology, defence, or women empowerment. He said, “When our daughters fly fighter jets, when India reaches the South Pole of the Moon, when our soldiers defeat enemies, every Indian proudly says, Vande Mataram!”
PM Modi also mentioned that this year-long celebration will honour all known and unknown heroes who gave their lives for the nation. He said, “This spirit of Vande Mataram will keep guiding us towards a developed and self-reliant India.”
Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Delhi Lt. Governor V.K. Saxena, and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta were also present at the event.
The celebrations included mass singing of the full version of “Vande Mataram” by citizens across India, showing unity and national pride.
