India is taking big steps towards a cleaner and greener future by promoting Electric Vehicles (EVs). On August 4, 2025, NITI Aayog launched two important reports to guide the country’s journey toward electric mobility. These reports aim to speed up EV adoption, reduce pollution, and build a strong EV ecosystem across all states.
Unlocking a $200 Billion Opportunity: Electric Vehicles in India
This report shows how electric vehicles can help India grow economically while protecting the environment. The report says India can create a ₹16 lakh crore (around $200 billion) opportunity if it boosts the EV sector properly.
Some key points from the report:
- EV sales in India increased from just 50,000 in 2016 to 2.08 million in 2024.
- While global EV sales also increased from 9 lakh in 2016 to nearly 1.9 crore in 2024, India’s growth is still slower.
- In 2020, India’s EV market was only one-fifth of the global average, but by 2024 it reached over two-fifths showing improvement.
- India’s target is to make 30% of all new vehicles electric by 2030.
This report gives several ideas and solutions to make the EV journey faster and smoother. It suggests:
- Better charging infrastructure
- Stronger government policies
- Support for EV makers and buyers
- More research and innovation
The report was launched by Shri Rajiv Gauba, Member of NITI Aayog, along with CEO Shri B. V. R. Subrahmanyam and other top officials. They said this report will help create jobs, reduce pollution, save fuel, and make India a global EV leader.
India Electric Mobility Index (IEMI)
Along with the EV opportunity report, NITI Aayog also launched the India Electric Mobility Index (IEMI) — a tool to measure how well each state and union territory (UT) is doing in the EV journey.
The IEMI is the first tool of its kind in India. It scores every state/UT out of 100, based on 16 different indicators in 3 main areas:
- Transport Electrification – How many EVs are sold in the state
- Charging Infrastructure – How many and how good the charging stations are
- Research and Innovation – How much effort is going into EV technology and manufacturing
This index will:
- Help governments see their strengths and weaknesses
- Encourage healthy competition between states
- Promote sharing of good ideas and practices
- Support better planning and faster action at the local level
According to NITI Aayog, states are the key drivers of change, and their active support is necessary to meet India’s Net Zero emissions goal by 2070.

Shri B. V. R. Subrahmanyam added,
“NITI Aayog is leading India’s EV movement. These reports will help the government, companies, and citizens work together for a better, greener future.”
