The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has launched a nationwide student outreach programme, S.H.I.N.E. – Science, Health & Innovation for Nextgen Explorers, aimed at igniting scientific curiosity and motivating the youth to pursue careers in health research.
Held on 7th and 8th August 2025 across ICMR institutes and DHR-Model Rural Health Research Units in 16 states and union territories, the event drew 13,150 students from grades 9-12 representing over 300 schools across 39 districts.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Secretary, DHR & DG, ICMR, said, “This is a unique initiative to inspire the next generation of health researchers. We want students to observe, question, and experience the spirit of scientific inquiry.”
The programme featured guided laboratory tours, research exhibitions, poster walks, live demonstrations, and interactive sessions with scientists. Students also viewed short films showcasing ICMR’s key contributions, including Covaxin development, the iDRONE healthcare delivery initiative, TB elimination efforts, and the Vishanu Yudh Abhyas pandemic preparedness drill.
A mascot, Dr. Curio, served as a friendly guide for students throughout the activities. The event coincided with the 104th birth anniversary of Dr. Vulimiri Ramalingaswami, former DG of ICMR and a pioneering medical scientist.
Through SHINE, ICMR reaffirmed its mission to build a scientifically aware and innovation-driven generation, contributing to the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047.
