Jal-Jeevan-Mission

28 JUL 2025 | New Delhi

The Government of India started a big mission in August 2019 called the Jal Jeevan Mission. The goal was to give clean tap water to every rural household in the country by the year 2024.

When the mission began, only 3.23 crore homes (about 17%) in villages had tap water. But now, as of 23rd July 2025, nearly 12.44 crore more homes have got tap connections. So, out of 19.36 crore total rural homes, over 15.67 crore homes (around 81%) now have running tap water.

To make sure all remaining homes get water and to keep the system working well in the future, the government has extended the mission till 2028. This was announced by the Finance Minister during the latest budget speech. The government is also planning to spend more money on it to improve water supply systems in villages.

This update was shared by Shri V. Somanna, the Minister of State for Jal Shakti, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

With this, the dream of “Har Ghar Jal” (Water in every home) is coming closer to reality.
