22 JUL 2025, New Delhi/ Pathankot
A great milestone was achieved on Tuesday morning as the Indian Army received its first batch of Apache AH-64E attack helicopters from the United States, marking an excellent step in strengthening its air power. The helicopters landed at the Army Aviation Base in Pathankot, Punjab, early in the morning.
These powerful helicopters are built by American aerospace company Boeing. Known for their ability to carry out precise attacks in all weather conditions and tough terrains, the Apaches are considered among the world’s best combat helicopters.
A First for the Indian Army
Since 2019 the Indian Air Force has been using Apache helicopters, but this is the first time the Indian Army is getting its own fleet. This will allow the Army to carry out independent missions without depending on the Air Force.
The Apaches are expected to play a key role in guarding India’s northern and western borders, especially in areas like Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh, where quick air support can make a big difference during any conflict.
Further, these advanced helicopters are expected to enhance the Army’s operational strength along the borders, especially in high-altitude conflict zones.
What Makes Apache Helicopters Special?
It’s often described as “tanks in the air.” The Apache AH-64E is one of the most advanced and lethal attack helicopters in the world. Originally developed by the U.S. Army, it is now used by multiple nations due to its high-precision targeting, advanced radar systems, and all-weather combat capability.
The Apache AH-64E is a highly advanced and battle-tested helicopter. The key features include things like It comes with a 30 mm machine or chain gun, equipped with Hellfire missiles, long-range guided missiles, night vision and thermal imaging, fire-control radar, and laser target designation to track enemy movements and protection from enemy fire.
All-weather and high-altitude operational capacity and advanced composite armor and crash-resistant systems. These helicopters are fast, flexible, and can operate both day and night. They are designed to help ground troops by attacking enemy positions, tanks, and bunkers.
Deal and Delivery
India had earlier signed a deal with the US to buy 22 Apache helicopters for the Indian Air Force in 2015. After their successful use, the government decided to buy six more for the Army under a deal signed in 2020. The first batch has arrived now, and the remaining helicopters will be delivered by mid-2026.
Moreover, the helicopters have been modified slightly to suit Indian conditions and requirements.
Deployment and Training
The helicopters will be stationed at bases in Pathankot (Punjab) and Jodhpur (Rajasthan). These locations are important because of their proximity to China and Pakistan borders.
Indian Army pilots and engineers have received training in both India and the United States to operate and maintain these helicopters. Boeing will also provide ongoing technical support and spare parts.
Strengthening India’s Defence
The arrival of Apache helicopters is part of India’s larger plan to modernise its military. With these helicopters, the Army will now be better prepared for fast and accurate operations, even in high-altitude and border areas.
According to defence experts, this move gives the Army a strong advantage during any future conflicts and improves its ability to respond quickly during emergencies.
The Indian Army’s induction of Apache helicopters marks a new chapter in its air combat abilities. These helicopters will help soldiers on the ground, improve border security, and add to India’s overall defence strength. It also highlights India’s growing partnership with the United States in defence and technology.
With more such modern equipment expected in the future, India is taking steady steps toward becoming a stronger and more self-reliant military power.
