India and Morocco have signed a new agreement to strengthen cooperation in the field of law and justice, aiming to support mutual legal processes and promote the exchange of legal knowledge between the two nations.

The agreement includes a Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Law & Justice of India and the Ministry of Justice of the Kingdom of Morocco.

What the Agreement Covers

The MLAT focuses on civil and commercial matters and includes assistance in:

  • Serving of summons and judicial documents
  • Collecting evidence through Letters of Request
  • Execution of judicial decisions and arbitral awards

Key Features of the MoU

The MoU aims to build stronger institutional links between India and Morocco in the legal field. Key points include:

  • Exchange of Expertise: Legal experts from both countries will share experiences on the working of courts and ministries.
  • Legislation Exchange: Sharing of legal books, bulletins, and materials to improve mutual understanding.
  • Training & Capacity Building: Organizing conferences, legal workshops, and training courses on law and justice.
  • Delegation Visits: Lawyers and officials from both countries can visit and attend training programs in each other’s institutions.
  • Technology Sharing: Cooperation on improving judicial information systems and using digital tools for faster justice delivery.
  • Joint Committee: A coordination group will plan practical, yearly programs to carry out the agreement.

This partnership allows India and Morocco to learn from each other’s civil and criminal justice systems, share legal reforms, and promote the rule of law. It also encourages legal modernization and helps develop advanced systems through shared knowledge and technology.
