In a major step towards strengthening bilateral economic ties, India and the Maldives have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation in fisheries and aquaculture. The agreement was one of six MoUs exchanged during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to the Maldives on 25 July 2025.
Key Focus Areas:
- Sustainable tuna and deep-sea fishing
- Aquaculture and resource management
- Fisheries-based eco-tourism
- Scientific research and innovation
- Value chain development and mariculture
The Maldives will boost its fish processing infrastructure by investing in cold storage and modernizing hatcheries. The initiative also focuses on diversifying aquaculture species and improving production efficiency.
To support long-term sector growth, the MoU will enable:
- Skill development programs
- Technical training in refrigeration, marine engineering, and aquaculture
- Knowledge sharing in biosecurity and aquatic animal health
Strategic Importance:
This MoU is a strong step toward advancing the Blue Economy in the Indian Ocean region. It will help create new trade opportunities, drive regional employment, and encourage sustainable fisheries business models.
India and Maldives aim to create a resilient and innovation-driven fisheries ecosystem, strengthening food security and marine livelihoods for both nations.
