The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a total outlay of ₹6,520 crore for the ongoing Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana (PMKSY). This includes an additional ₹1,920 crore for the scheme during the 15th Finance Commission period (2021-22 to 2025-26).
The approval focuses on two main goals:
- ₹1,000 crore will be used to set up:
- 50 Multi-Product Food Irradiation Units to help preserve food.
- 100 NABL-accredited Food Testing Labs to improve food safety and quality.
- ₹920 crore will be used to support other projects under various components of PMKSY.
These projects will be started after inviting applications from eligible companies and organizations. The selection will be based on existing guidelines of the scheme.
The new irradiation units are expected to add a food preservation capacity of 20 to 30 lakh metric tonnes per year. The testing labs will be set up by the private sector and will help ensure that food products meet safety standards before reaching consumers.
This step is part of the government’s effort to boost food processing, reduce wastage, and provide safe and quality food to the public.
