The Ministry of Coal held its 12th round of coal block auctions for commercial use between July 28 and 31, 2025. In this round, 7 coal blocks were successfully auctioned 3 of them were fully studied (explored), and 4 were partly studied.
Together, these blocks have about 1,761 million tonnes of coal, and can produce around 5.25 million tonnes of coal every year (excluding the partly explored ones).
Here’s what happened in the auction:
- Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh were the main states where these coal blocks are located.
- Companies like Orissa Alloy Steel, Damodar Valley Corporation, and others won the blocks.
- Most of the coal is non-coking, which is used for making electricity.
The government said that these 7 blocks will:
- Bring in about ₹720 crore every year,
- Attract investments worth ₹787.5 crore,
- And create around 7,000 jobs.
Since the start of commercial coal mining in 2020, the government has auctioned 131 coal blocks, which could produce 277 million tonnes of coal each year. Once all these blocks start working, they are expected to:
- Bring in ₹39,359 crore revenue every year,
- Create jobs for 3.75 lakh people,
- And reduce India’s need to import coal from other countries.
The Ministry of Coal says these steps are helping to build a stronger and more self-reliant India an ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’.
