Protean eGov Technologies, formerly NSDL e-Governance, is sharpening its focus on digital public infrastructure and AI-powered products to scale its presence in India and abroad.

The company, known for building systems for PAN, tax filing, pensions, and Aadhaar enrolment, is now pushing into new growth areas under Chief Product and Innovation Officer Bertram D’Souza. “For us, digital identity is central and we are creating products on top of existing digital rails to unlock greater value,” D’Souza said.

Protean’s strategy is built on two tracks an infrastructure layer of long-term projects such as Aadhaar authentication, eSign services, central KYC revamps, and consent management platforms; and an innovation layer, which develops B2B and B2B2C products like workflow-based eSign, onboarding APIs, RegTech tools, and data analytics. Over the last 18 months, the company has onboarded more than 100 new B2B clients.

Artificial intelligence is being deployed to address real-world frictions. A voice-and-text AI assistant supports rural distribution agents in local languages, while an AI eSign risk alert tool summarizes key contract clauses before a user signs. Protean has also embedded AI into its RISE API platform to help developers resolve errors faster.

Beyond AI, Protean is strengthening its consent management solutions as India prepares for the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act. Its AgriStack framework standardises land and crop data, enabling lenders to provide fairer credit to farmers.

The company has also set up a subsidiary in Dubai to expand across the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia. All technology and intellectual property are built in-house by teams in Mumbai and Pune, while select partnerships with startups add specialised capabilities.
