The Government of India has received 6,915 suggestions from citizens and stakeholders on the Draft Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Rules, 2025, which aim to implement the provisions of the DPDP Act, 2023. These rules are intended to safeguard the digital personal data of individuals while enabling lawful data processing.
The DPDP Act, 2023 offers a balanced approach by protecting the right to privacy and ensuring that data processing activities are done responsibly. The public consultation reflects growing public interest in digital privacy and responsible data handling.
Strengthening Cybersecurity and Awareness
To create a safe and accountable cyberspace, the Government has taken several steps under its national cybersecurity strategy:
- Regular training programs for government officials and IT professionals to improve cybersecurity skills.
- Public awareness campaigns, such as Cyber Security Awareness Month and Safer Internet Day, to promote secure digital behavior.
- CyberShakti programme, launched in October 2024, to build a skilled cybersecurity workforce among women.
- ISEA (Information Security Education and Awareness) programme has conducted 3,637 workshops, reaching over 8.2 lakh people, including students, law enforcement, and public officials.
- Awareness materials like videos, posters, and guides whcih are available in multiple languages are shared via platforms like staysafeonline.in, infosecawareness.in, and csk.gov.in.
National Cybersecurity Infrastructure
- The National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC) ensures the safety of critical digital infrastructure.
- The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) handles cybersecurity incidents and issues timely advisories.
- The National Cyber Coordination Centre (NCCC) helps detect and respond to cyber threats in real-time.
- The National Cyber Security Coordinator (NCSC) facilitates coordination across departments for national cybersecurity.
Citizen-Centric Services
The Cyber Swachhta Kendra (CSK) offers free tools to detect and remove malware, along with useful safety tips for both individuals and organizations.
Additionally, under the IT Rules, 2011, companies are required to adopt reasonable security practices to protect sensitive personal information.
The DPDP Act mandates that Data Fiduciaries, entities that collect and manage personal data implement strict technical and organizational safeguards to prevent breaches. They will be held accountable in case of any data leaks.
