New Delhi, Feb 6

India has made significant progress in highway construction over the last decade. Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, informed Parliament that the country has built approximately 1,01,900 km of national highways from 2014 to 2024. This marks a 130 pc increase in the construction speed compared to the previous decade (2004-2014).

Gadkari also highlighted that 1,366 highway projects are currently in progress across India, covering a total distance of about 32,366 km. These projects span across multiple states, including Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, and the northeastern region. Most of these highways are expected to be completed in phases by 2028.

Use of New Technology in Road Construction

The government is introducing modern technology to improve highway construction. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has tested an Automated & Intelligent Machine-aided Construction (AIMC) system on the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway Project. This system uses advanced machines like GPS-enabled graders, intelligent compactors, and automated paving equipment.

According to Gadkari, AIMC has several advantages:

  • Faster Construction: Roads are built more quickly without compromising quality.
  • Higher Efficiency: The process is more streamlined and productive.
  • Better Monitoring: Real-time tracking ensures smooth progress.
  • Improved Road Quality: Ensures smooth and long-lasting roads.

The government is now planning to introduce AIMC technology in all national highway projects.

Strict Quality and Safety Standards

Gadkari emphasized that all highway construction projects follow strict quality and safety guidelines set by the Indian Roads Congress (IRC) and the government. Contractors must adhere to these standards at every stage, from design to construction, operation, and maintenance.

To ensure safety, regular road audits and quality inspections are conducted by engineers, independent consultants, and third-party experts. If any issues are found, they are addressed immediately by the contractors.

With the rapid expansion of highways and the use of modern technology, India is moving towards a more efficient, safe, and well-connected road network.
