BHUBANESWAR, SEP 21

The Weather and Climate Hackathon (WATCH), a significant initiative focused on tackling global issues related to weather, climate change, and air quality, wrapped up on Saturday at KIIT-DU, here. Organised by Bronx Community College (BCC/CUNY) in partnership with the US Consulates in Hyderabad and Mumbai, the event brought together a diverse group of students and faculty from 16 higher education institutions across India and the City University of New York.

Participants hailing from states including Goa, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat collaborated to develop innovative solutions aimed at addressing critical environmental challenges. Utilizing data from a network of 22 weather and air quality stations, established through grants from the US State Department and the National Science Foundation (NSF), teams created programs, tools, and applications designed to enhance public understanding and awareness of local climate and air quality issues.

The hackathon focused on five essential themes: precision farming, the application of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in weather and air quality, improving air quality, addressing heat waves, and promoting sustainable cities. The event culminated in an exciting pitch competition where participants showcased their most impactful solutions.

Dr. Milton Santiago, President of Bronx Community College, highlighted the importance of such events in fostering collaboration between the United States and India, the world’s two largest democracies. He emphasized that collective efforts are crucial in combating climate change and enhancing global resilience.

KIIT and KISS Founder Dr. Achyuta Samanta expressed pride in the event’s success, noting that it offered international participants a deeper understanding of Odisha’s rich culture, heritage, and advancements in education.

In his keynote address, Prof. Peter Groffman from CUNY discussed the necessity of “Climate Proofing the Future” and strategies for preparing for climate extremes.

The event also featured insights from prominent figures, including Sita Raiter, Public Diplomacy Officer from the US Consulate General Mumbai; Alexander McLaren, Public Affairs Officer from the US Consulate General Hyderabad; Prof. Neal Phillip; and Prof. Paramita Sen from Bronx Community College.
