LANJIGARH, NOV 5
Vedanta Lanjigarh, India’s premier producer of smelter-grade alumina and a unit of Vedanta Aluminium, has organized a comprehensive series of training and workshops to reinforce best safety practices across its operations. The initiative included mock drills, training sessions, and shop floor demonstrations focused on managing critical safety parameters throughout the plant. More than 250 employees and business partners participated in these sessions.
Conducted every six months, the periodic mock drill sessions aim to strengthen emergency response protocols, ensuring the safety teams are well-prepared for a variety of emergencies, including evacuations, security risks, fire outbreaks, electrical malfunctions, and more. This initiative highlights the company’s commitment to achieving a ‘zero harm’ workplace while also protecting surrounding communities. Senior district officials responsible for industry-related administration were present to observe the sessions.
The Critical Risk Management workshop addressed key safety issues such as pedestrian-vehicular interactions, working at heights, and risks associated with isolation and confined spaces. The training aimed to raise awareness among participants about various measures that contribute to a safe and collaborative working environment. The modules covered 13 different safety concerns, emphasizing promoting road safety through dynamic driving conditions and safe internal vehicular operations; ensuring safe working conditions at elevated sites; demonstrating proper isolation procedures for working near high electrical power sources; and establishing effective identification and rescue plans for confined spaces.
Reiterating the company’s dedication to safety, Pranab Kumar Bhattacharyya, CEO – Alumina Business, Vedanta Ltd. said, “We are committed to building a robust safety culture through behavioral safety training and a zero-tolerance approach to unsafe practices. By proactively investing in monitoring, mitigation, and safeguarding our workers, we pave the way for operational excellence and a steadfast pursuit of safety at every level.”
Vedanta Aluminium’s Lanjigarh refinery implements a variety of initiatives to ensure workplace safety. These include Suraksha Sankalp Diwas, a monthly campaign focused on raising safety awareness among employees and business partners; Training on Wheels, a program that reinforces safety protocols through live demonstrations via mobile safety vans; and various road safety initiatives, such as the installation of speed monitoring cameras utilizing advanced AI technology across different sites. Additionally, the refinery employs critical risk management modules, with safety officers deployed to ensure compliance with safety protocols related to electrical contact, working at heights, crane and lifting operations, equipment entanglement, vehicular-pedestrian interactions, isolation, confined spaces, and rail safety. Finally, efforts are made to ensure consistency in the use of personal protective equipment through effective advocacy and monitoring.
