NEW DELHI, NOV 27
Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, has expanded its sustainability efforts in Odisha through a new partnership with PwC India. The collaboration focuses on innovative biodiversity conservation and carbon reduction initiatives, reinforcing Vedanta Aluminium’s long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development.
The companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to launch a series of pioneering projects aimed at restoring ecological balance, reducing carbon emissions, and supporting local communities. These initiatives will leverage global best practices and advanced assessment tools to ensure measurable outcomes for both biodiversity conservation and climate action.
Under this partnership, Vedanta and PwC will implement a range of impactful initiatives. One of the key projects will focus on carbon sequestration through the implementation of advanced methods to generate carbon credits, which will help offset emissions. Additionally, the partnership will address ecological imbalances by systematically removing invasive species and replacing them with native flora, using GIS-based mapping tools and seasonal restoration plans. This effort aims to restore the natural ecosystem and enhance local biodiversity. Another significant initiative will see the distribution of 2,000 energy-efficient cookstoves to local communities, helping to reduce biofuel usage, lower emissions, and improve air quality. Furthermore, the companies will establish dense, fast-growing forests using the Miyawaki technique to promote carbon sequestration and bolster local biodiversity.
The partnership will also focus on restoring degraded lands to achieve No Net Loss of Biodiversity. Detailed habitat development plans, developed in collaboration with local NGOs and Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs), will guide these efforts. These measures will not only help mitigate climate change but also support the well-being of local communities by addressing issues like air pollution and forest depletion.
Commenting on this partnership, Sunil Gupta, Chief Operating Officer (COO), Vedanta Aluminium, said, “This collaboration with PwC reinforces Vedanta Aluminium’s commitment to sustainable growth and environmental stewardship. By addressing critical ecological challenges and fostering community well-being, we aim to set new benchmarks for responsible business practices in the industrial sector. Together, we are taking decisive steps to ensure the conservation of our natural resources for future generations while fostering a healthier, greener planet.”
Further highlighting the importance of this collaboration, Sandeep Kumar Mohanty, Partner – ESG Strategy & Transformation/Leader – Sustainability and Climate Strategy, PwC India said, “We are engaged by Vedanta Limited to explore advanced strategies for preserving biodiversity and reducing carbon emissions. Our efforts aim to support a more sustainable future for local communities and the environment.”
