BHUBANESWAR, AUG 31
Tata Power Central Odisha Distribution Limited (TPCODL) has launched a Meter Data Analysis Group (MDAG) to enhance its efforts in combating electricity theft. This specialized team, comprising highly experienced employees, will use advanced, in-house developed software to analyze consumer energy meter data, processing large datasets efficiently.
While consumer meters primarily record and generate consumption data for billing and tariff purposes, they also gather extensive information that can be leveraged beyond billing. By applying various analytical methods to this data, TPCODL aims to assess not only the quality of supply and installation but also identify potential electricity theft and technical losses.
The MDAG’s main objective is to detect and address potential cases of electricity theft, a significant challenge for the company. Through detailed data analysis, the group will generate leads for targeted enforcement raids, helping to mitigate commercial losses from practices such as meter tampering or illegal connections. Currently focusing on consumers with high energy consumption, the group plans to extend its analysis to lower consumption users in the future.
Electricity theft poses a societal issue, unfairly burdening honest consumers. TPCODL encourages individuals to report any incidents of electricity theft via WhatsApp at 9437158670 or through the call center at 1912. Reports will be kept confidential.
Commenting on the initiative, TPCODL CEO Arvind Singh said, “We urge our consumers to report electricity theft, as their cooperation is vital in curbing these illegal activities. Such collective efforts help reduce the financial strain on honest customers and enhance the reliability of our electricity distribution. We are dedicated to providing fair and reliable service, and with community support, we can make significant progress toward this goal.”
