MUMBAI, OCT 16
Tata Steel has been awarded the World Steel Association (worldsteel) Safety and Health Excellence Recognition 2024 for its innovative online purging assistance model, which significantly mitigates explosion risks in the gas cleaning plant area of its blast furnace.
The recognition evaluates steel producers based on their safety and health improvements across four key areas: safety culture, occupational safety management, occupational health management, and process safety management.
Rajiv Mangal, Vice President of Safety, Health & Sustainability at Tata Steel, emphasized the company’s commitment to employee safety and the use of advanced technologies to achieve a ‘zero harm’ environment. The new purging assistance model allows for real-time monitoring of the purging process, drastically reducing purging time by 50 per cent and ensuring 100 per cent safe plant operations.
The initiative not only enhances safety but also generates significant cost savings, estimated at $215,000 per shutdown. Tata Steel continues to prioritize digital innovations and has established the Process Safety School of Excellence to bolster the safety competencies of its workforce.
