Smart Meters

BURLA, AUG 27

Metering technology has advanced significantly, evolving from electromechanical meters to static electronic meters, and now to smart meters, which offer enhanced accuracy and efficiency in measuring electricity consumption. Smart meters represent an advanced version of static electronic meters, incorporating communication capabilities that make them “smart.” These meters have been rigorously tested under various conditions and certified by authorized agencies, ensuring their reliability and accuracy.

In response to their numerous benefits, the Ministry of Energy, Government of India, has mandated the installation of smart meters nationwide. This directive aims to enhance consumer benefits by reducing manual meter reading and billing processes and eliminating billing errors. Subsequently, the Odisha State Electricity Regulatory Commission (OERC) directed all distribution companies (discoms) in Odisha to accelerate the installation of these meters. TPWODL is following these directives and actively installing smart meters as instructed by the OERC.

Smart meters offer several advantages. They can record and communicate electricity usage over extended periods, allowing consumers to access and analyze their past consumption history. This feature aids in better management of electricity use. The ability to obtain accurate readings remotely eliminates the need for manual intervention, reducing errors in billing and ensuring timely billing to capture slab benefits accurately. Additionally, smart meters are available in both prepaid and postpaid modes, providing flexibility for consumers. They also facilitate faster restoration of services by quickly identifying power failures in substations or networks and support precise energy accounting, which helps in reducing aggregate technical and commercial (AT&C) losses.

For those interested in verifying the accuracy of their smart meters, TPWODL offers testing services at state-of-the-art NABL-accredited laboratories located in Rajgangpur, Burla, and Bolangir. Consumers are advised to disregard any misinformation from unauthorized sources and avoid removing smart meters, as this can lead to dangerous electrical accidents and is also unlawful. For further assistance or to address any concerns, consumers can contact their nearest TPWODL office or call the 24×7 toll-free number 1800-3456-798.
