The Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) marked a significant advancement in workplace cleanliness and sustainability with the launch of an innovative Industrial Vacuum Dust Cleaning System at the Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) Shop of Steel Melting Shop-II (SMS-II). This initiative was part of the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ campaign, underscoring RSP’s commitment to a healthier work environment.
The system was inaugurated by Atanu Bhowmick, Director In-Charge (DIC) of RSP, during a special program attended by senior officials. The event drew a large crowd of employees and management, all eager to witness this leap toward improved workplace hygiene.
Designed to efficiently eliminate dust from the shop floor and elevated areas, the new vacuum system utilizes advanced suction technology. With its powerful capabilities, it can capture even the tiniest dust particles and larger debris, drastically reducing the need for manual cleaning and enhancing the overall quality of life for employees and visitors alike.
The system operates on energy-efficient 3-phase electric power and features a network of pipes strategically installed throughout the shop, facilitating dust removal from ground level to the roof. By improving air quality, this technology plays a crucial role in preventing the spread of airborne diseases and minimizing risks associated with dust and pollution.
Developed under the leadership of TP Sivasankar, CGM (SMS-II), the project addresses the pressing need for sustainable waste management in the workplace. Unlike traditional cleaning methods, which can be labour-intensive and time-consuming, this innovative solution offers a swift and eco-friendly approach to maintaining cleanliness in the BOF Complex. Following its successful commissioning, plans are underway to extend the system to other areas of SMS-II.
To commemorate the occasion, employees and contract labourers took a swachhata pledge, reinforcing their commitment to a cleaner workplace.
