BHUBANESWAR, OCT 18

As many as  80 orthopaedic surgeons from across the country participated in a cadaveric workshop on Thursday focused on the “Direct Anterior Approach (DAA) for Hip Replacement and Unicondylar Knee Arthroplasty (UKA).” This marked the first demonstrative workshop of its kind in Odisha.

Held at the Anatomy Department of KIMS, the workshop coincided with the 20th Annual Conference of the Indian Arthroplasty Association, ‘IAACON 2024,’ taking place in the city. The DAA approach is a specialized technique for hip replacement that enhances early post-operative mobility with minimal complications. Conversely, UKA addresses a single compartment of the knee and is particularly beneficial for elderly patients.

The event was inaugurated by Dr. AP Mohanty, Dean and Principal of KIMS, in the presence of distinguished national and international faculty, including Dr. Dermot Collopy and Dr. Rami M. Sorial from Australia. Dr. Debashish Mishra, Head of the Orthopaedic Surgery Department at KIMS, and Dr. Prajna Paramita Samanta, Head of the Anatomy Department, played pivotal roles in organizing the workshop.

Key organizers included Dr. Debabrata Padhy, Senior Consultant at Apollo Bhubaneswar and Organizing Secretary of IAACON; Dr. Tanmoy Mohanty, Professor of Orthopaedics at KIMS and Organizing Chairman; Dr. Satya Ranjan Patra, Secretary of the Odisha Orthopaedic Association and Professor at KIMS; and Dr. Sujit Tripathy, Professor at AIIMS Bhubaneswar and Course Convenor.

The organizers extended their gratitude to the Department of Anatomy at SCB MCH, Cuttack, especially Dr. Rajesri Mallick and Dr. Manoj Dehury, for their support in providing donated cadavers for the workshop.
