The Odisha government is set to empower women by distributing the first instalment of the Subhadra Yojana on October 9. This program aims to provide financial assistance to over 40 lakh women, with each beneficiary receiving Rs 5,000 directly into their bank accounts.
The Subhadra Yojana was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his birthday, September 17, this year. On that day, about 25.11 lakh beneficiaries received their first instalment. Now, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi will oversee the next distribution in Baripada, Mayurbhanj district, during the Durga Puja festival.
So far, nearly 96 lakh women have registered for the scheme, and those who apply by October 7 will be eligible for this instalment. Mayurbhanj was chosen for this second phase because it has been a leading example of women’s empowerment in the country.
Named after the sister of Lord Jagannath, the Subhadra Yojana was a significant promise made by the BJP during their election campaign in Odisha. Under this initiative, eligible women aged 21 to 60 will receive a total of Rs 50,000 over five years, starting in 2024 and ending in 2029. Each year, beneficiaries will get Rs 10,000 in two instalments: one on Rakhi Purnima and the other on International Women’s Day (March 8). The initiative aims to support over 1 crore women in Odisha.
This move reflects the government’s commitment to empowering women and improving their economic status in society.
