New Delhi, Feb 10

London-based tech company Nothing has announced that its latest smartphone series, Nothing Phone (3a), will be made in India. This decision supports the Indian government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, which encourages companies to manufacture products locally.

Why is Nothing Manufacturing in India?

Nothing said that it wants to take advantage of India’s strong manufacturing industry, invest in the local economy, and promote technological innovation.

The Nothing Phone (3a) Series is being produced at a factory in Chennai, which employs over 500 workers. Interestingly, 95% of the workforce at this facility are women.

Nothing’s Growth in India

  • According to Counterpoint Research, Nothing saw a huge 577% increase in smartphone sales in India in 2024.
  • This growth was fueled by the success of its previous model, the Phone (2a) Series, and its sub-brand CMF by Nothing.
  • The company recently achieved $1 billion in total revenue within just four years of launching in 2020.

India’s Mobile Manufacturing Boom

  • 99.2% of mobile phones sold in India are now made in the country.
  • The total mobile manufacturing value in India has reached ₹4,22,000 crore, with exports exceeding ₹1,29,000 crore in 2024.
  • India manufactures 325-330 million mobile phones every year.
  • The country has around 1 billion mobile phones in use.

What’s Next for India’s Manufacturing Industry?

India is now aiming to deepen its role in mobile manufacturing by focusing on producing components and semiconductors, which are key parts of smartphones.

Nothing’s Expansion in India

  • The company has rapidly expanded its retail presence, growing from 2,000 stores last year to 7,000 stores now.
  • The Nothing Phone (3a) Series is designed in London but manufactured in India, combining British design with Indian manufacturing expertise.

This move is a win-win for both India and Nothing, as it boosts local production, creates jobs, and strengthens India’s position as a global smartphone manufacturing hub.
