BHUBANESWAR, AUG 31
The ongoing doubling work on the Koraput-Singapur Road (Rayagada) rail line, stretching 165 kilometres, is advancing steadily despite significant engineering hurdles. This crucial project aims to enhance connectivity and support regional development, navigating complex geological and environmental conditions.
The doubling work between Laxmipur and Tikiri, spanning 22.94 kilometres, has been successfully completed and commissioned. Tenders have been floated for the construction of tunnels and bridges over a 45.46-kilometre stretch between Tikiri and Bhalumaska Stations, an area prone to landslides. The 27.82-kilometer section between Laxmipur Road and Baiguda is scheduled for completion within the current fiscal year.
The Koraput-Rayagada route traverses several landslide-prone areas, notably the Tikiri-Bhalumaska section. The existing line has 36 tunnels, and the doubling will add 32 more — 19 between Tikiri and Bhalumaska, 9 between Bhalumaska and Singapur Road, and 4 between Baiguda and Laxmipur Road. The project involves significant cuttings, with one side bordered by hills rising over 100 metres and the other by deep valleys, making construction particularly challenging and hazardous. The longest tunnel in the project will span 2 kilometres, highlighting the scale of the engineering required. The rail line crosses a Ghat Section and Reserve Forest Area, necessitating careful planning to minimize environmental impact.
The Koraput-Singapur Road rail line is renowned for its stunning scenic views, comparable to those in Europe. Doubling this rail line will not only enhance the efficiency and capacity of rail transport but also create new tourism opportunities in the region. Improved rail connectivity is expected to attract more tourists, allowing them to experience the area’s natural beauty and cultural richness. Enhanced infrastructure will facilitate exploration of the region’s landscapes, further boosting local economies and promoting sustainable tourism.
The doubling of the Koraput-Singapur Road rail line represents a significant advancement in regional railway infrastructure. Once completed, the project will improve the capacity and efficiency of rail transport, benefiting both passengers and freight operations. Despite the formidable challenges, the project team remains committed to completing the work on schedule, ensuring safety, and maintaining the highest standards of engineering excellence.
