KALINGANAGAR, NOV 8
Jindal Stainless Limited (JSL) has launched an extensive waste management initiative in the villages of Sholei, Shingagadia, and Danagadi, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts. The project aims to raise environmental awareness, improve sanitation, and transform the area into a model community for sustainable waste management.
Key features of the project include daily door-to-door waste collection, with separate vehicles collecting wet and dry waste from households. Wet waste is turned into compost at a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Dhuligarh, while dry waste is sent for recycling outside Odisha. The compost is then distributed to residents at no cost, encouraging its use in local gardens and farms.
In addition to waste collection, JSL has organized regular road cleaning programs and initiated the rejuvenation of a polluted pond in Sholei. Local volunteers, along with sanitation committees, are actively involved in maintaining cleanliness across the villages. Aiming for long-term community ownership, JSL has also cleared old waste dumps and planted ornamental trees to foster a cleaner, greener environment.
Educational outreach plays a key role in the project, with competitions held in local schools to engage students on waste management topics, and tree planting initiatives underway at Mantira College. The project also includes the creation of a medicinal plant garden at Kumbhiragadia School to preserve endangered species.
Collaborating with the Green Dream Foundation and supported by the RWSS Department and Trijanga Panchayat, JSL hopes to ensure the success and sustainability of this initiative. Tapan Kumar Naik, Senior Manager of JSL’s CSR Department, and Sukant Kumar Rath, CSR Head, emphasized the importance of community cooperation for the project’s continued success.
