Innovative scaffolding solution RSP blast furnance

ROURKELA, NOV 22

SAIL-run Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has successfully launched a critical repair project at Blast Furnace-5, ensuring the safety and operational integrity of the one-kilometre-long pipe conveyors that transport coke from Coke Oven Battery-6 to the Blast Furnace-5 Stock House.

The focus of the repair was to address significant corrosion and damage to the structural components of Trestle-1, a crucial support system located 42 meters above the ground. Due to the complexity and height of the task, assembling secure working platforms presented a major challenge. To tackle this, the Blast Furnace Department partnered with the RC (M) department to develop an effective solution. After a joint inspection, RC (M) quickly mobilized a robust scaffolding service, bringing in 15 tons of scaffolding material from other sites. Work on the scaffolding began on November 11, 2024, and the first level was completed, allowing the BF Mechanical team to start the repair work.

Senior officials overseeing the operation included KP Misra, GM (BF), S Akhtar, AGM (RC(M)), Amit Naik, AGM (BF), and I Bhengra, Senior Manager (RC(M)), along with DSOs and ASOs from the Safety Engineering Department.

This repair project highlights the effectiveness of the centralized scaffolding service contract, introduced for the first time at SAIL under the leadership of RN Rajendran, CGM (Mechanical), and with guidance from Jayadeep Sethy, GM In-charge (RC(M)). Finalized last year, the contract has been instrumental in the successful execution of 532 jobs across various departments of the plant, ensuring safe and efficient operations.
