According to a survey released on Thursday, the smartphone market in India expanded by a meager 1% during the April-June quarter (Q2), with 36.4 million units sold.
6.7 million smartphones were supplied by Xiaomi, which took an 18% market share and the top spot back after six quarters.
According to industry research firm Canalys, Vivo closely trailed, delivering 6.7 million handsets as well, helped by mid-range and reasonably priced 5G models.
Samsung shipped 6.1 million devices, placing them in third place. With 4.3 million and 4.2 million devices shipped, respectively, realme and OPPO (apart from OnePlus) completed the top five, the survey stated.
Top mass-market brands increased their mid-high-end portfolios in the second quarter, according to Sanyam Chaurasia, senior analyst at Canalys. They will also leverage early monsoon sales to clear inventory so that new models can be introduced in time for the holidays.
The mass-market segment’s erratic demand, the gradual transition from feature phones to smartphones, and the rising popularity of used smartphones are some of the issues facing the market.
Because of this, Chaurasia stated, “brands frequently turn to creating unnatural demand through festive promotions.”
According to the survey, manufacturers will place a greater emphasis on “brand experience” across goods and channels in order to achieve long-term advantages, even as 5G device upgrades continue to drive growth in 2024.
