India’s coal production surges 6pc to 830 million tonnes

India’s coal production has increased by 5.88% to 830.66 million tonnes (MT) between April 2024 and January 2025, compared to 784.51 MT during the same period in the previous year, according to a statement from the Coal Ministry.

In January 2025 alone, coal production reached 104.43 MT, a 4.38% rise from 100.05 MT in January 2024. The production from captive, commercial, and other entities also saw a significant rise, increasing by 31.07% to 19.68 MT in January 2025, up from 15.01 MT in the same month last year.

Coal dispatch followed a similar upward trend. Total coal dispatch in January 2025 reached 92.40 MT, reflecting a 6.31% growth compared to 86.92 MT in January 2024. Dispatch from captive and other entities increased by 29.94%, reaching 17.72 MT in January 2025, compared to 13.64 MT last year.

Cumulatively, coal dispatch up to January 2025 stood at 843.75 MT, a 5.73% increase from 798.02 MT in the same period last year.

In terms of captive and commercial mines, total coal production for the financial year 2024-25 reached 150.25 MT by January 2025, surpassing last year’s total of 147.12 MT by January 27, 2025. This represents a significant 34.05% increase compared to 112.08 MT in January 2024. Coal dispatch for the same period also grew by 33.75%, reaching 154.61 MT, surpassing last year’s total of 142.79 MT.

Additionally, the Ministry of Coal has granted Mine Opening Permissions for three new mines – Bhaskarpara, Utkal E, and Rajhara North (Central and Eastern). Rajhara North is notable for being the first commercial coal mine in Jharkhand to receive this permission, a move expected to boost coal production in the region.
