Coal production upto may 2025

02 JUN 2025, new Delhi

India’s coal production and dispatch recorded a strong performance in May 2025, showing steady growth compared to the same month last year. The Ministry of Coal has been working consistently to improve coal supply and reduce the country’s dependency on imports.

According to the latest data, total coal production in May 2025 stood at 86.24 million tonnes (MT), up from 83.96 MT in May 2024. A major contribution came from captive and commercial mines, which produced 16.93 MT, a significant increase from 13.83 MT last year. This marks a year-on-year growth of 24.57% in production from these mines.

Coal dispatches also saw a good rise, reaching 17.499 MT in May 2025 — a 13.76% increase over last year. This ensures continuous coal supply to major sectors such as power, steel, and cement.

Coal stocks also grew by 29.18%, with total coal stock reaching 122.69 MT as of 31st May 2025, compared to 94.98 MT the previous year. This reflects better supply management and production planning.

In addition to production achievements, three major clearances (Stage-I, Stage-II Forest Clearances, and Mining Lease) were obtained for various coal blocks during the month. Also, vesting orders for six coal blocks across Maharashtra, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh were signed under the 11th round of auctions on 29th May 2025.

These developments highlight the government’s commitment to boosting domestic coal production and support the goal of a self-reliant (Atmanirbhar) India.
