India has emerged as the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer, with over 300 manufacturing units now operational nationwide, Union Minister for Railways and Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced on Tuesday.
Impressive Growth in Mobile Manufacturing
- From 2 units in 2014 to over 300 units today, India has seen remarkable growth in mobile manufacturing.
- 99.2% of mobile phones sold in India are now locally produced, with the manufacturing value reaching Rs 4,22,000 crore.
- Mobile exports have surged, crossing Rs 1,29,000 crore in 2024, a sharp rise from nearly non-existent exports in 2014.
‘Make in India’ Driving Mobile Production & Exports
- In 2014-15, only 26% of mobile phones sold in India were made locally; now, the majority is produced domestically.
- India manufactures 325-330 million mobile phones annually, contributing to an estimated 1 billion phones in use across the country.
- Prime Minister Modi’s ‘Make in India’ vision has been pivotal in transforming India into a global mobile manufacturing hub.
Boost to Employment and Economy
- The growth in mobile manufacturing has generated approximately 12 lakh direct and indirect jobs over the past decade, benefiting numerous families and contributing to the country’s socio-economic growth.
Focus on Expanding Value Chain and Semiconductor Manufacturing
- India is now shifting focus to deeper value chain development, particularly in producing components and semiconductors.
- The India Semiconductor Mission and several key projects, including Micron and Tata Electronics, are aimed at establishing a semiconductor manufacturing base in India.
A Shift in Global Production
- The Minister emphasized that production is shifting back to India across various sectors, including toys, mobile phones, defence equipment, and EV motors.
