The Indian government would collaborate with private companies to establish tiny reactors, conduct research and development on small modular reactors, and develop novel nuclear energy technologies in an effort to include the private sector in the nuclear power industry.

As Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented her seventh Union budget to the Parliament on Tuesday, she stated, “Nuclear energy is expected to form a very significant part of the energy mix for Viksit Bharat.”

“In order to achieve that goal, our government will collaborate with the business sector to establish Bharat Small Reactors, conduct research and development for Bharat Small Modular Reactors, and investigate and develop innovative nuclear energy technologies. This industry will have access to the R&D financing that was mentioned in the interim budget, the speaker stated.

Russia and the US have expressed interest in helping India construct tiny modular reactors. Compact, factory-made modular reactors with a capacity of less than 300 MW are referred to as small modular reactors.

The US and India are collaborating to create next-generation compact modular reactor technology for both home and international markets.

President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned “the ongoing discussion on developing next-generation small modular reactor technologies in a collaborative mode for the domestic market as well as for export” during the latter’s visit to the US last year, according to a joint statement released by the White House.
