Google on Thursday unveiled a number of new features that would use artificial intelligence (AI) and regional partners to make Maps travels in India more effective and sustainable.
The business announced that it is rolling out a new feature for Maps users in India that is intended to discourage four-wheeler drivers from using small roads.
The first step is determining road widths, which is very difficult considering the size and variety of India’s road system.
In order to address this, Google Maps Vice President and General Manager Miriam Daniel stated, “We’ve developed an AI model specifically for Indian roads that incorporates multiple signals — satellite imagery, Street View, and other information like road types, distance between buildings, paved sections, etc. to estimate road widths at scale.”
This not only makes driving less stressful for four-wheeler drivers, but it also makes using these tiny roadways safer and more confident for bikers, walkers, and other commuters.
Additionally, to alert users to tight areas of your path so they can proceed slowly or take an alternate route, the business is adding “clear callouts” to Maps, Directions, and Navigation screens.
This week, the feature will be available on Android devices in eight cities: Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Coimbatore, Indore, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, and Guwahati. The business plans to expand this to iOS devices and additional locations in the near future.
A further function will alert users of flyovers along the suggested path. This will assist in anticipating impending flyovers and helping you be ready to board the flyover in advance.
“For both two- and four-wheeler active navigation on Android applications and Android Auto, you’ll see these flyover callouts in 40 Indian cities starting this week. We’ll soon have compatibility for iOS and CarPlay,” stated Lalitha Ramani, General Manager of Google Maps for India.
In India, Google is adding useful data on EV charging stations to Google Maps and Google Search for electric vehicles (EVs).
“To add authoritative information for over 8,000 charging stations, representing a significant portion of available charging stations in India, we’re collaborating with leading EV charging providers in India, ElectricPe, Ather, Kazam, and Statiq,” the tech giant stated.
Google and ONDC announced in December of last year that they would be working together to improve Google Maps’ public transportation experience.
