The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) released data on Monday that indicated that India’s domestic air passenger traffic increased 4.7% (year over year) to over 9.23 crore in the January–July period from over 8.81 crore during the similar period of the previous year.
When comparing domestic air passenger traffic on a monthly basis, the growth was 7.33% (1.21 crore air travelers in July 2023 versus 1.3 crore in July 2024).

Budget airline IndiGo carried more than 5.61 crore passengers over the course of the seven-month reporting period, registering a massive market share of 60.8%. Air India, operated by the Tata Group, flew over 1.25 crore passengers, accounting for a share of 13.6%, while Vistara, registering a share of 9.6% with 89 lakh passengers, came in third.
The Tata Group company AIX Connect, formerly known as AirAsia India, carried 49.89 lakh passengers in the first seven months of this year, accounting for a 5.4% market share.
According to data from the aviation regulator, SpiceJet carried 41.78 lakh passengers at a 4.5 percent market share, while Akasa Air carried 42.38 lakh passengers at a 4.6 percent share.
For the month of July, scheduled domestic carriers had a 1.90 percent cancellation rate overall.
The scheduled domestic carriers had received 1,097 complaints about passengers in July alone. Based on DGCA data, the number of complaints per 10,000 passengers transported in July 2024 was around 0.84.
The main causes of complaints are issues with flights. 1,097 complaints were received by airlines, of which 1,095 were resolved, according to the aviation watchdog.
Domestic air passenger traffic increased to 1.32 crore in June from 1.24 crore in the same month the previous year, a 5.76 percent increase.
