Coal production from captive, commercial mines shoots up by 35 per cent in April-June

According to data released by the Ministry of Coal on Wednesday, the amount of coal produced by the nation’s captive and commercial mines increased by 35% to 39.53 million tonnes in the April–June quarter of 2024–25 from 29.26 million tonnes in the same period of the previous financial year.

Parallel to this, the amount of coal dispatched increased by 34.25 percent year over year to 45.68 million tonnes (MT) in the first quarter of FY25 from 34.07 million tonnes (MT) in the corresponding April–June quarter of FY24.

According to the ministry, the amount of coal produced for the power sector increased significantly in the first quarter of this year, jumping from 25.02 million tonnes (MT) in Q1 of last year to 30.16 MT, representing a growth of 20.5% year over year.

Comparably, the dispatch to the electricity sector grew by 23.3% year over year, from 28.90 MT in Q1 of last year to 35.65 MT in Q1 of this year.

According to the Ministry of Coal, it is still steadfastly committed to helping all coal block allottees overcome obstacles and streamline their operations in order to dramatically increase coal production and guarantee a steady supply to satisfy the country’s growing energy needs.
