AMD teams up with IIT B

In an effort to support semiconductor companies in the nation, chipmaker AMD India and the Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE), an incubator at IIT-Bombay, launched a partnership on Monday.

As part of the collaboration, AMD will give funds to firms at IIT-B that are being incubated and are developing spiking neural network (SNN) devices that use less energy.

The startups will need to come up with strategies to drastically cut down on the amount of energy that traditional neural networks use.

By 2025, we want to provide AMD CPUs and accelerators enabling AI and HPC training with a 30x increase in energy efficiency. According to AMD India Country Head Jaya Jagadish, “This means we are increasing the energy efficiency of compute nodes at a rate that is significantly faster than the aggregate industry-wide improvement made during the last five years.”

The business “continuously works with industry bodies and academia to support initiatives that help drive innovation,” according to Jagadish.

India should support, develop, and expand semiconductor startups as it works to implement a comprehensive strategy in this area.

The CEO of SINE-IIT Bombay, Shaji Varghese, continued, “SINE’s endeavour is to foster and create strong, product-focused, cutting-edge semiconductor design startups by addressing gaps in the industry, as design cycles are long and cost of entry high in the semiconductor design area.”

Numelo Technologies received the first award to build SNN devices based on silicon on insulator (SOI) ultralow power quantum tunneling technology.

As part of its corporate social responsibility initiative, the partnership prioritizes providing high-quality STEM education and supports scientific research.
