New Delhi, Feb 3
As of January 28, 2025, more than 30.58 crore unorganised workers have been registered on the e-Shram Portal to receive benefits from various government social welfare schemes. The information was shared in Parliament on Monday.
In 2024 alone, over 1.23 crore workers have enrolled on the e-Shram portal, with an average of 33,700 registrations per day, according to Minister of State for Labour and Employment Shobha Karandlaje in a written response to the Lok Sabha.
The Ministry of Labour and Employment launched the e-Shram portal (eshram.gov.in) on August 26, 2021, to create a National Database of Unorganised Workers (NDUW) linked with Aadhaar. This platform helps unorganised workers by providing them with a Universal Account Number (UAN) based on self-declaration. The portal is currently available in 22 Indian languages, making it accessible to a large number of workers.
Integration with Various Schemes
The e-Shram portal is connected to 12 social welfare schemes run by different central ministries. This integration helps workers access benefits from these schemes more easily. The platform is also linked with the National Career Service (NCS) Portal, allowing registered workers to find job opportunities using their UAN. Workers registered on e-Shram can seamlessly enroll on the NCS portal to explore employment options.
Additionally, e-Shram is integrated with the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-dhan (PM-SYM) pension scheme, which supports unorganised workers aged 18-40 years. Under this scheme, workers receive a monthly pension of ₹3,000 after they turn 60 years old. The government pays 50% of the contribution, and the worker pays the remaining amount. The UAN makes it easier for workers to enroll in this pension scheme.
Support for Migrant and Construction Workers
A special feature has been added to capture family details of migrant workers, ensuring better support for them. The portal also shares data of construction workers with states and Union Territories so that they can be registered under the Buildings and Other Construction Workers (BoCW) boards, which provide welfare benefits to such workers.
Skill Development and Digital Integration
To help unorganised workers improve their skills, e-Shram is connected with the Skill India Digital portal, which offers skill enhancement and apprenticeship programs. This initiative by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship helps workers improve their employability.
Moreover, e-Shram is integrated with the myScheme portal, a national platform designed to help citizens find government schemes based on their eligibility. This makes it easier for workers to discover and apply for schemes that they qualify for.
A One-Stop Solution for Social Welfare
The Ministry of Labour and Employment launched e-Shram as a “One-Stop-Solution” on October 21, 2024. This platform integrates multiple government welfare schemes into a single portal, allowing unorganised workers to track the benefits they have received.
So far, 12 key schemes have been linked with e-Shram, including:
- Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY)
- Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY)
- Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana
- Prime Minister Street Vendors AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM-SVANidhi)
- PM Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U)
- PM Awas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G)
- Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS)
By bringing all these schemes under one platform, e-Shram is making it easier for unorganised workers to access government benefits, job opportunities, and financial security. This digital initiative ensures that workers in the informal sector receive the support they need for a better future.
