Indian Railways has launched an advanced ‘water level monitoring system’ for the comfort of train passengers with the first installation on the Brahmaputra Mail Express which will carry out trial runs.

The innovative system represents a major advancement in water management for long-distance trains, aimed at ensuring consistent and reliable water availability for rail passengers.

Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), highlighted that the Water Level Indicator, a real-time water monitoring system, has been installed as a pilot project on one rake of the Brahmaputra Mail Express at Kamakhya Railway Station.

The pilot project’s successful completion could result in more widespread usage on other trains, greatly increasing the effectiveness of water management systems while trains are in motion.

The water levels in the train’s water tanks may be accurately and continuously monitored with this cutting-edge system. He stated that because it makes use of GPRS and LoRa-based connectivity, it can transmit data wirelessly over great distances at minimal power, which makes it especially useful in isolated areas. According to Sharma, the system has programmable real-time data logging and storage. Data is collected and transferred using a hydrostatic pressure sensor, which detects water levels between one and five meters with an accuracy of 0.5%.

Additionally, the system has an integrated real-time clock that synchronizes data logging with exact time stamps to support accurate data analysis and guarantee effective water management. With its ability to guarantee water supply 24/7, the water level indicator is positioned to be a vital instrument in upholding high service standards on lengthy routes.

Northeast Frontier Railway’s general manager, Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, spearheaded the project at the Kamakhya Railway Station, which is close to the organization’s headquarters. After Guwahati Railway Station, it is the second-largest railway station in Guwahati.

“Now that they can be sure of a consistent water supply the entire way, passengers on the Brahmaputra Mail Express can travel in greater comfort,” Sharma stated.
