PM Surya Ghar scheme

New Delhi, Feb 12

The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY) has benefited 8.46 lakh households by providing rooftop solar panels in its first year, according to the Ministry of Renewable Energy. The scheme, launched on February 13, 2024, has significantly boosted India’s shift to solar energy.

The installation rate of rooftop solar panels has increased ten times since the scheme began, with 70,000 solar panels installed each month.

Top Five States Benefiting from the Scheme:

  1. Gujarat – 41.47% of total installations
  2. Maharashtra – 22.79%
  3. Uttar Pradesh – 8.69%
  4. Kerala – 7.73%
  5. Rajasthan – 3.14%

Key Features of the Scheme:

  • Goal: To provide free electricity by installing solar panels on one crore households by March 2027.
  • Subsidy: Up to 40% financial support to make solar energy affordable.
  • Financial Support: ₹4,308.66 crore has been given as subsidies to 5.54 lakh consumers, with an average benefit of ₹77,800 per household.
  • Savings: Around 45% of beneficiaries now get zero electricity bills due to solar power generation.
  • Government Savings: Expected to save ₹75,000 crore annually in electricity costs.
  • Environmental Impact: Helps reduce carbon emissions, supporting India’s clean energy goals.

How It Works:

The subsidy amount is based on a household’s average electricity usage and the size of the rooftop solar system installed. Families can use the scheme to cut down on electricity expenses while also contributing to a greener and more sustainable future.

The PM Surya Ghar initiative is the world’s largest domestic rooftop solar program and a major step towards making India a leader in renewable energy.
